Connect Google Analytics to track AI bot traffic and analyze your visibility

Integrating Google Analytics with Ranketta allows you to track AI bot visits to your website and analyze traffic patterns from AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity.

Why Connect Google Analytics?

By connecting Google Analytics, you can:

  • Track AI Bot Traffic: See which AI models are visiting your site
  • Analyze Referral Sources: Understand how users find you through AI
  • Monitor Traffic Patterns: Identify trends in AI-driven traffic
  • Measure Impact: Correlate AI visibility with actual website traffic

Prerequisites

Before connecting Google Analytics, ensure you have:

  • A Google account with access to Google Analytics
  • A Google Analytics property set up for your website
  • Admin access to your Ranketta company account

Connecting Google Analytics

Step 1: Navigate to Settings

  1. Go to SettingsCompany in your dashboard
  2. Find the Google Analytics section

Step 2: Start OAuth Flow

  1. Click the Connect Google Analytics button
  2. You'll be redirected to Google's authorization page
  3. Sign in with your Google account
  4. Review the permissions Ranketta requests:
    • Read-only access to Analytics data
    • Access to your email and profile information
  5. Click Allow to grant permissions

Step 3: Complete Connection

After authorization:

  1. You'll be redirected back to Ranketta
  2. The connection status will show as Connected
  3. Ranketta will start syncing your Analytics data

What Data is Tracked?

Ranketta tracks the following from Google Analytics:

AI Bot Detection

Ranketta automatically identifies AI bots based on:

  • User Agent Strings: Detects known AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, etc.)
  • Referral Sources: Identifies traffic from AI chat interfaces
  • Hostname Patterns: Recognizes AI provider domains

Tracked Metrics

  • Sessions: Number of AI bot sessions
  • Page Views: Pages visited by AI bots
  • Referral Sources: Which AI models referred traffic
  • Geographic Data: Where AI traffic originates
  • Time-based Trends: Traffic patterns over time

Using Google Search Console

You can also connect Google Search Console to:

  • Get keyword suggestions for prompt generation
  • See which queries drive AI bot traffic
  • Analyze search performance alongside AI visibility

Connecting Search Console

  1. In the Google Analytics section, click Connect Search Console
  2. Follow the same OAuth flow
  3. Grant permissions for Search Console read access
  4. Your keywords will be available in prompt generation

Viewing Analytics Data

Traffic Dashboard

Navigate to Traffic in your dashboard to see:

  • AI bot traffic over time
  • Breakdown by AI provider
  • Top pages visited by AI bots
  • Geographic distribution

Filtering Options

You can filter traffic data by:

  • Date Range: Select custom date ranges
  • AI Provider: Filter by specific AI models
  • Country: View traffic by geographic location
  • Page: See which pages get the most AI traffic

Disconnecting Google Analytics

To disconnect Google Analytics:

  1. Go to SettingsCompany
  2. Find the Google Analytics section
  3. Click Disconnect
  4. Confirm the disconnection

Note: Disconnecting will stop data syncing, but historical data will remain available.

Troubleshooting

Connection Issues

If you're having trouble connecting:

  • Ensure you're using the correct Google account
  • Check that you have admin access to the Analytics property
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies

Missing Data

If data isn't appearing:

  • Wait 24-48 hours for initial data sync
  • Verify your Analytics property is receiving traffic
  • Check that AI bots are actually visiting your site
  • Ensure your site allows AI crawlers (check robots.txt)

Permission Errors

If you see permission errors:

  • Verify you have admin access to the Analytics property
  • Check that the OAuth scopes were granted correctly
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting
